Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How many times have you found yourself immersed in a beautiful book, that challenged your thinking, brought tears to your eyes, or made you laugh out loud? My students need complex, rich text in their hands so they can experience great books every day.
My students come from homes of significant poverty.
Generally, they live with single parents of multiple children. In many cases, multiple families live under one roof. They attend their neighborhood school in a district of 5 elementary schools, 2 middle schools and 2 high schools (one traditional and one alternative). My students entered the 5th grade reading at about a 2nd grade reading level and were far behind in nearly all other content levels. My students are eager to learn and are making tremendous progress this year! They are full of questions and eager to explore new things everyday. To help them achieve a high level of engagement and learning, they desperately need books in their hands!
My Project
I have requested a rich variety of texts to build our classroom library. The new Common Core Standards ask students to read complex text, text that lends itself to deep and critical analysis and thinking. Once students understand how to access challenging text, they begin to challenge themselves and the world around them in a new, deeper way. The texts are rich in language and content and will help propel students to a new level of learning.
My students come from a very challenging background.
As their teacher, its not only my job, but my deep desire to give them the tools and resources to do and to be anything they want in the world. It is so important to provide them with the resources they need to help them achieve their dreams. Literature, poetry, graphic novels and informational text open them to a world different than their own and show them the world of possibilities ahead of them.
