There are so many things to love about our creative, curious, 21st century learners. Our students are very diverse in many ways, including performing on a wide range of academic abilities. It is so fun to educate children who are so different from one another to celebrate that diversity and make students feel proud and inspired by their differences. They love to ask questions and explore different aspects of learning. They are the center of everything we do at our school, as they encompass and empower our core values and mission of authentic learning, individualization and personalization, global awareness and bilingualism, metacognitive skill development, and innovation.
Our students are excited and energetic about learning.
They love to come to school and love to be challenged through inquiry and investigation!
My Project
After spending a few years teaching first grade, I have realized that first grade is where students begin to flourish as readers, from pattern books to chapter books, and in one class you can have such a wide range of reading abilities. Each student is working on their own personal goals to become better readers, as they work to develop their reading skills, building their fluency, and gaining confidence. Students start to realize that they can read independently and begin to devour any book within their grasp. It is truly a joy to see students fall in love with reading. However, I am finding it difficult to provide them stimulating texts to read in small groups, in order to challenge them and push them to the next level.
I want my students to love what they are reading so much that they don't want to put the book down and continue to challenge themselves to become better readers.
This can be achieved through reading stimulating chapter books in small guided reading groups or book clubs. We currently don't have enough of the same chapter books to create a set. Therefore, these chapter books sets will help each student to have a book in front of them to challenge themselves, as well as help them push their peers in their group to learn higher level reading skills, though small group reading, partner reading, and independent reading.
