Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This will be my sixth year teaching but my first year teaching at this bilingual school! The students at OA are curious and engaged bilingual learners. Many are learning English as their second language, whereas others are learning Spanish as their second language! My students live in the beautiful city of Washington DC!

My priority is building a safe learning community that guides my students in becoming cooperative, confident, curious, and courageous citizens of the world.

As third graders, my students are being challenged to work cooperatively with others as well as work independently. The biggest compliment I get from my students all the time is that I "make learning fun!"

My Project

In my 3rd grade classroom students that are on level or below get small group reading instruction with me called Guided Reading. Students that are advanced readers in my class meet with what is called Literature Circles (We call them Lit Circles for short). In Lit Circles, students are working in groups without teacher support to read and analyze chapter books on their reading level. Students each have different roles each week like the Questioner, the Artist, Vocabulary Detective, etc. They read 2-4 chapters each week and complete their assignments and then share their work at the end of the week with each other. Not only does Lit. Circles push their reading skills, its helps them to become more independent and be able to work collaboratively!

The problem is that because my school only goes up to 3rd grade, we have very few sets of books that are for students reading at 4th-7th grade level (like some of my students are!) For this project I am asking for sets of advanced chapter books that my students can read during Lit Circles.

I chose specific texts based on student reading levels and texts that I think they will be engaged in. Books like HOLES, ESPERANZA RISING, and FISH IN A TREE! These books will be able to be used with my students for years to come!
