Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have a wonderful and diverse first-grade class. I have students with IEP's, English Language Learners, gifted students and everything in between. Each of my students enjoy coming to school and during a daily transition activity they often tell me that school is their "happy place." I teach at a Title 1 school where all students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. 99.1% of our students come from low-income households. My students are a huge part of my heart and I strive to make a difference in their lives. We are a family in our classroom and I am on a mission to help each student a become lifelong learners.
My Project
These materials will keep my students focused on success. I have several students who are quick to finish their reading journals, math work, etc. However, when they are done there is nothing fun and challenging for them. I created this project because I want them to have something exciting to look forward to that will also stimulate their brain. I have hand picked games, puzzles, legos and a few other fun things that will be great brain teasers for all of my students.
These materials will give my high achieving students something to look forward to because they will have these brain stimulating activities to work on after their work is complete.
The puzzles range in difficulty so that they can interest all of my students. These puzzles will be used as morning work and also on the “when I’m done shelf.” Legos are great for fine motor strength, creativity, math and problem solving. The legos I purchased will be used during math time and will also be on the “when I’m done shelf” to keep my high achieving students focused on their work. I currently have two puzzles in my class and my students absolutely love working with them but at this point they can finish them so quickly so we need more to keep them interested.
I have brilliant students and I want to continue their love of learning by expanding their opportunities in the class. These materials will provide them hands on activities and keep them engaged in class while their friends are completing their work.
I will make these materials readily available so that when students have had their work checked they will be able to choose an activity to work on at their desk.
