My Students

As the AIG (Academically/Intellectually Gifted) teacher at my school, I have the opportunity to work with a very inquisitive group of 5th graders who are academically gifted or high performers in the areas of reading and/or math.

Although the students are already working at an advanced pace in their classrooms, they come to my ACES (Accelerated Curriculum for Exceptional Students) class for activities that further enhance their curriculum.

In other words, they should explore, create, and stretch their brains in ACES.

My Project

Recently, I attended a Robotics Competition at a neighboring elementary school. At the competition, I saw students coding LEGO Mindstorms EV3 robots to drive on obstacle courses called Challenge Mats. I was very impressed with all of the problem-solving skills and coding knowledge required of the students to successfully maneuver their robots on the Challenge Mats.

My students build and code the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 robots but they do not get to experience the challenges or teamwork required to successfully complete the tasks on the Challenge Mats.

Students learn, practice, and showcase their coding skills for the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 robots on Challenge Mats. I want to include the Challenge Mats in my students' Robotics Unit so that they too will experience thought-provoking coding tasks just like the students at the Robotics Competition.

I have access to the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 kits, Challenge Mat templates, and a poster printer but I need the 6 foam boards and 3 cans of adhesive spray in order to assemble the Challenge Mats.
