This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember good old fashioned chalkboards? Today, they are forgotten and replaced by whiteboards and technology boards, but they are very useful in the development of fine motor skills.

I currently have 26 Kindergarteners from a very low socio-economic area in California.

They are a bright, well-behaved bunch who has a high motivation to learn. They love hands-on activities and are up for a great challenge. They are looking forward to mastering every standard with pride.

My Project

I noticed when whiteboards replaced chalkboards, student's fine motor skills began to decline. When you write on a whiteboard, you are essentially writing with a ink-filled smooth flowing marker. When you write on a chalkboard with chalk, you are forced to draw the character (letter, number, word, sentence, etc) After a short period of time, student's fine motor skills begin to improve when they transfer their chalk-writing skills to their pencil-writing skills, which is significantly lighter than chalk.

I have used chalkboards before in my class and time after time have seen the difference it makes.

Chalkboards eventually wear out and they can be expensive to replace. Schools do not put this equipment in their budget and it falls on me, the teacher, to buy these and I do believe that they work.
