My Students
Chalkboards are outdated and ineffective. Writing and erasing lessons from the board takes away from valuable instructional time, and many students cannot see what is written on the board. Why are we stuck with a 200+ year old technology that doesn't work all that well?
My students attend an inner city, high poverty school.
Despite many challenges they face at home and in their neighborhoods, they are motivated students who are eager to learn.
They are learning advanced algebra concepts and they need many visual tools and examples to make learning these abstract math concepts more concrete. As I present material in a highly visual way, they become much more engaged and excited about their learning. When I share their work with their classmates, they swell with pride and continue to push themselves to excel.
Our classroom currently consists of a broken overhead projector and an old, damaged chalkboard. Having a document camera to project student work or teaching materials for students to see, will help them engage in the lessons. When students can see their own work projected on the wall and be able to share their thinking, it creates a classroom that engages everyone.
My Project
My students need an Elmo document camera in their classroom. With this one piece of educational technology, students will be actively engaged in the learning process.
Visual as well as hands-on learners will benefit from the use of a classroom document camera by being engaged in meaningful discussion with examples from their own classmates! I will also be able to help the environment by reducing the amount of copies needed to provide in class.
These students deserve to be successful.
This document camera will give my students the opportunity to elaborate their thinking and collaborate with their classmates.
With the current shift to Common Core Standards, there is a greater emphasis on deep understanding of concepts. Our goals of becoming successful readers and mathematicians with deep understanding of concepts will be that much more achievable once we are able to utilize a document camera to share our work.
