My students attend an inner city, high poverty school. Despite many challenges they face at home and in their neighborhoods, they are motivated students who are eager to learn. They are learning advanced algebra concepts and they need many visual tools and examples to make learning these abstract math concepts more concrete. As I present material in a highly visual way, they become much more engaged and excited about their learning. When I share their work with their classmates, they swell with pride and continue to push themselves to excel. Our classroom currently consists of a broken overhead projector and an old, damaged chalkboard. Having a document camera to project student work or teaching materials for students to see, will help them engage in the lessons. When students can see their own work projected on the wall and be able to share their thinking, it creates a classroom that engages everyone.
