Each year, my AP environmental students complete an urban biodiversity research project. A component of this is bird watching every month. We attached the donated bird feeders to the classroom window and have since seen many sparrows and black-capped chickadees! The feeders helped to attract birds to our area, and students always get excited when birds come to visit. After completing their research at the end of the year, students complete poster boards which they use to present their findings in a gallery-walk style to the school community. We call this the school's \"Conservation Expo\". \r\n\r\nStudents spent two full days in class completing their poster boards. They were provided with colorful markers, construction paper, paints, and their research slides. It was so fun seeing students insert creativity into their science projects. There were some great paintings especially, such as massive trees to illustrate greenspace and roads showing habitat fragmentation. Students were excited to work on their poster boards and even wished they had more time in class to add more creativity! All students proudly stood by their poster boards during the gallery walk and used them to present their research to teachers and other students. \r\n\r\nNext year, we plan on completing this project again. It truly is a great way for AP students to showcase their research and serves as a stepping-stone to what would be expected of them in college. The poster boards are expensive, and it is difficult for many of my students to buy materials such as these.
