My students need a Roller coaster Building Set and Stem Expolrations Swing Ride Building Set in order to expand their work with potential and kinetic energy.
My new role this year is teaching gifted and talented enrichment classes on four different campuses. I see students in 1st Grade thru 5th Grade. My students range from 1st grade thru 5th grade and include many diverse backgrounds. One common thread among them all, is their desire to learn and seemingly non-stop curiosity.
We have a unique opportunity to bring STREAM into the classroom and create an environment that is student driven and learning has infinite potential.
I often hear my colleagues refer to an achievement gap however, I feel that it is more of an opportunity gap. My goal is to bring as many opportunities to our students as possible.
My Project
Students will design a variety of chain reactions to demonstrate their knowledge of potential and kinetic energy. Students explore the physics needed by engineers in designing today's roller coasters, including potential and kinetic energy, friction and gravity. First, they learn that all true roller coasters are completely driven by the force of gravity and that the conversion between potential and kinetic energy is essential to all roller coasters. Second, they consider the role of friction in slowing down cars in roller coasters. Finally, they examine the acceleration of roller coaster cars as they travel around the track.
The Rollercoaster Building Set, Swing Ride Building Set, Motorized Marble Run Set with Elevator, and the Marble Genius Jumps & Swings will support students as they take on the role of an Engineer through designing, building and analyzing the models they create.
