Money. This topic involves essential life skills that even young children must master to successfully maneuver the real world of economics. I teach third graders. Each year some students enter my classroom with intimate knowledge of money concepts. These children can identify coins, count the value of a handful, and make change for currency. Other students, however, enter with only rudimentary skills. I am always on the lookout for items that can provide individual practice without being insultingly obvious remediation tools. “Money Math Calculator” fits this description. This product is a 6½ inch calculator with big buttons representing bills and coins instead of numbers. Students can practice with the following concepts: *values of bills and coins *dollar and cent symbols *money as a decimal *operations with money All my students will covet time with these special calculators, and I can structure enrichment as well as remedial activities that will meet all class needs. Best of all, the children who need the practice the most will not be perceived as “different” as they work to catch up with their peers!
