My Project

A goal of learning the engineering design process is understanding how products can support and impact end-users. While this process is incredibly important, it is often overlooked in engineering and technology classrooms. The CGM Bear project puts this focus at the center and encourages students to think of their end-user throughout the entirety of the project.

The CGM Bear project is designed to encourage students to build empathy for an end-user and create a product which will be donated to fellow kids both locally and nationally.

Throughout this project, students will learn about Type I Diabetes through conversations with an RN, research constant glucose monitors (CGMs) and their importance for people with diabetes, study the history of the push to modify stuffed toys to better represent individuals with physical differences, design and 3D print a CGM, sew the CGM onto a teddy bear, and create a screen printed T-shit for the bear. Once the bear has been modified to include a CGM, they will be donated to children's hospitals to give to kids who have been newly diagnosed with diabetes.

This project has many goals. One is certainly for students to develop STEM skills in a hands-on, engaging project. Throughout this project, students will have the opportunity to practice and apply skills in 3D design, 3D printing, sewing, graphic arts, and physical fabrication. In addition, a major goal of this project is for students to develop empathy and understanding of their end-user. By learning about the science of diabetes, as well as the movement to modify stuffed toys to increase representation for all individuals, students will be engaged and connected to this project.
