My Students

I teach 9th to 12th graders in an urban community with about a 65% low income rate.

My students are AMAZING!

They come from diverse backgrounds. This diversity is one of the things I love about our high school. We pride ourselves in being accepting of all abilities, ethnicities, orientations, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Each student brings different ideas and approaches to every project. Students learn so much from each other in our art classes because of their diversity of experiences.

My Project

Currently my ceramic students spend about a month on a clay box project where students roll out slabs of clay on their table using rolling pins. I want to provide our students with a professional piece of equipment that one would find in most ceramic studios, a slab roller. This slab roller allows students to flatten a piece of clay to a desired size which they will then attach to create 3-dimensional works of art.

A slab roller will allow students to focus on their ideas and construction techniques.

In the past, students spent a lot of time rolling out slabs only to find that they are too dry or too thin for their ideas. If students could use this equipment to roll out their slabs it would free up materials and time to complete another project using slabs.

My students deserve professional materials and resources so they can explore their ideas more fully without unnecessary frustrations.
