My Students

I teach at a Title-I school. Due to covid most of the students in my class have never attended preschool. Their parents have been fatigued and overwhelmed with life and this has caused the majority of parents not to be focusing on their children's pre-kindergarten education. The students at our school came in this year without a single one of the 85 kindergartners knowing all the letters and sounds. Despite the lack of previous learning, the students are thriving!

These kindergartners are bright children who have just never been exposed to learning opportunities before.

The materials I am asking for with this grant are to help the students have experiences they have been deprived of. They need opportunities to play with and learn from educational materials.

My Project

These students have been slowed down by coivd, but they have not been stopped! Center Time is one of the most important and beloved times in kindergarten. The materials that are being requested in this grant will help center time be a time of learning. The activities that students do during center time need to be challenging enough to keep them actively engaged in their learning yet simple enough that they can do them independently.

The students will love the variety that these materials will give them and they will be more engaged in their learning.

Our district is in the process of shifting from a whole language reading approach to a phonics approach. The books that we have in our classroom library are not books that the students can read on their own. These books will give them the ability to use the lessons they are learning in small group to read books that are decodable so they will be able to read them independently.
