I teach in a school that welcomes and encourages parent involvement in the classroom. Fortunately, many parents are very involved in my classroom and as a result, I am able to provide small group instruction with hands-on activities.
I am requesting learning centers to help provide the necessary instruction for each child at THEIR level. For example, students who are just learning their letters and sounds will need learning activities that with that as a focus. Students who are fluent readers will need centers that challenge higher level thinking skills such as comprehension.
I teach all subjects to a class of 20 ethnically diverse children. Because I teach a kindergarten/first grade multi-age class, I have children who range in age (both developmentally and chronologically) from 4 years old to 8 years. Perhaps the most challenging aspect of my job is to meet the needs of all of my students. To do this, I rely on small group instruction and could really help a number of children through student centers.
The children are actively involved in their learning, and hands-on materials help the learning process to run more efficiently and smoothly. It is my belief that children learn best by "doing", your investment will provide an opportunity for substantial learning.
