This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
This past year was the first time in over 10 years my school went back to self-contained third grade. Because of this, I now teach reading, writing, and math instead of English Language Arts alone. The school purchases enough of the math curriculum for every student including all reproducible books, but does not provide any of the math manipulative needed to make their learning concrete.
The resources in this project will help my students grasp new math material because of the concrete and hands-on nature of each item.
Students will now be able to model and practice the skills, instead of relying on watching me or attempting to incorrectly draw examples. These items will also allow my students to partake in math centers. While I meet with small groups of students that are struggling to understand new concepts, the rest of the class will be able to practice math skills in a fun and hands-on manner. These centers cover a multitude of mathematics including time, money, geometry, and fractions.
Other centers will foster a love for literacy. Since I have taught ELA for over 10 years, I have many reading-focused centers, but I am missing the phonics and grammar components. These new centers would fill those gaps.
I can't wait to help foster a love for learning and show students that everyone is capable of understanding these deep and difficult topics in a fun way.
