FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Mak's classroom raised $813
This project is fully funded
First grade is an important time in a child's life. It's when formal writing begins. It's the job of a first grade teacher to ensure that every single child in the class can write by the time he/she leaves the first grade. This is no small task given the range of talents and backgrounds in the classroom. Every year, over 75% of my students in this inner city school are English language learners. 89% of the students at our school receive free reduced lunch status.
So, how do you inspire a group of twenty first grade English language learners to write in English? You have them write about their own experiences!
Last year, some of my eager students kept insisting on using my camera to take photos. I allowed a few students to take photos of their peers, and I found that this experience generated a lot of talking and social interactions, encouraging the development of English language. One of my shy students built a lot of self-confidence as he became better and better at taking photos.
This year, with a new digital camera that can be rotated among all the students, I hope to allow my students the opportunity to take photos of their peers and their families on an ongoing basis to encourage writing, English language development, leadership skills, decision making, and confidence. My students would take photographs in the classroom, in the school yard, during field trips, and at special events.
After deciding who they wanted to photograph and which photos they wanted to print, students would write stories to go along with the photographs. They could choose one photograph to write about or they could write about a series of photos. The children will be eager to write because they have learned new words/vocabulary from their experiences. They will be proud to show off what they have just learned and mastered! The students' photo stories will be kept and bound into a book, which they may take home and share with their families at the end of the school year. The photo story book will showcase each student's writing progress throughout the school year.
Photos are always motivating forces in the classroom. Children love to look at them, talk about them, write about them, and keep them! With your help, not only will you enable children to use / practice their English language skills both orally and in writing, but you will be providing each child with a personal storybook of photos for them to cherish at home with family and friends.
