My Students

"When I look back, I am so impressed again with the life-giving power of literature. If I were a young person today, trying to gain a sense of myself in the world, I would do that again by reading, just as I did when I was young." Maya Angelou said, I want my kids to see the deeper meaning of books.

My students are in a New York City public school 2nd grade classroom.

I teach in an inclusion classroom that has both general and special education students. They absolutely love reading and we are blessed with a beautiful library. However, many of my students struggle with comprehending what they are reading. Teaching comprehending strategies must be done on a daily basis for them to understand how to read a book and read for meaning.

My Project

I am requesting a variety of reading centers and supplies to help build my students understanding of books. All of these supplies will be used to make centers available in my classroom for them to have more practice with comprehension strategies. They will be able to create projects at the end of stories that they read so I can see if they truly understood what they read. These resources will change the way my students read and help them build up their comprehension. They will be able to show their creativity through supplies where they can add their artistic abilities to create projects about what they read. The charts that I am requesting will help us display our vocabulary words from books that we read and also display spelling words and strategies we used while reading.

Your donations will add more excitement to our classroom while the students are reading.

It will help them become better readers and find more meaning in the books that they read. All of these supplies I will be able to use with my students not only this year but also in the future. We will be one step closer to being amazing readers!
