This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. This is the reality as a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district. Every year despite these challenges I work to keep things exciting and engaging providing them with various creative and meaningful learning experiences.

Every year I work with my students to build a love of learning in all capacities.

From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a caring, creative and positive way, I hope to always inspire my students to continue moving on the path to excellence.

My Project

One of the best ways to foster a love of learning is to allow students to opportunity to practice the skills they need in a fun and interesting ways. Studies show that students learn best when working in small groups. I approach this idea by implementing centers into my math block. These small groups should foster conversation and practice of mathematical skills. While many of my centers are teacher created these materials would allow for more engaging centers.

These materials would allow my students the opportunity to not only have fun, but to practice valuable math skills at the same time!

Many of them would promote greater conversations about math and even give students the opportunity to practice explaining their mathematical thinking.

The power pen learning materials will provide a fun an engaging way for students to test their knowledge in math. These smart pens will also allow my students to self-check their work and correct any errors they make. The problem solving centers will allow them valuable opportunities to practice one of the most important math skills they will come across this school year, critical thinking. By being able to work collaboratively with their peers to solve problems students are not only practicing their problem solving skills, but also the practice the computational skills they have already learned.

While the majority of my students are below grade level in math, this project will allow them to practice their skills in a way that is accessible to them. The skills they will learn through the use of these materials will travel with them forever.
