My Students

Hi there! I teach an amazing group of kindergarten students that come from diverse and unique ethnic backgrounds from around the city. My students are loving, dedicated and hardworking students who come into my classroom with a smile on their faces and a hunger for learning every day. They are always looking for ways to share their learning and help one another. As I prepare now for a new school year, I am anticipating another incredible group of students. Our school is a Title I Chicago Public School located in an urban environment with a tremendous school and amazing neighborhood community. Our staff, administrators, parents, and community members work together to provide the best education possible to our hard working and dedicated students.

My Project

Five- and six-year-olds are natural, enthusiastic learners. Their impulse to ask questions, to investigate, and to explore, examine, and experiment, comes from a burning curiosity about the world and a desire to understand things. They learn, grow, and internalize through interactive experiences with each other, with adults, and with real materials that uses all of their senses. For this reason, I spend careful time planning diverse learning centers, with open-ended activities and hands-on materials, to use throughout the year.

Learning centers are areas within the classroom where students learn about specific subjects by playing and engaging in activities.

This level of interaction in each center sparks creativity and develops key mental development, essential for their growth. It also happens to be my students' favorite part of day, participating in center time. Creating centers requires an abundant amount of materials and resources. Although we have limited resources at our urban K-8 school, I feel my students deserve to have the best learning materials.

My students are in need of headphones, a CD player, CDs and books to use in a listening center. Also, tag readers are an amazing way for students to practice reading in their listening centers. Students use the tag readers to highlight unfamiliar words that can be read to them, this improves students vocabulary skills and helps students learn to read. Additionally, my student are in need of supplies that allow them to simply play, such as, blocks, magnetic tiles and painting tables. Play is an active form of learning that involves the whole self. Even cognitive development, the primary focus in today's kindergarten, is achieved through child-initiated exploration and discovery.

Your donations will provide us with the materials we need to tremendously improve our listening, art and play centers for my students this upcoming school year.
