Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a Title I school with about 500 students. The majority of our student population is Latino and African-American, many of whom reside in temporary housing facilities in the South Bronx. Our student population is comprised of over 100 who have special needs and 98% of our students are eligible for free lunch. Despite these odds and challenging circumstances, our students come to school each day and are encouraged to see our school's vision, which is for all of our students to "Be our best, love learning, and inspire the world!"
With a continued perspective on strong instructional practices and improving students' outcomes, we are focusing on supporting our students' academic, social, and emotional growth and development.
This focus is important in that we believe students learn best through regular interactions with adults who know them well in a supportive and safe environment.
My Project
Working independently is a big part of what kindergarten strives to do. Center activities and games will allow my students to be able to work independently and in small groups to build foundational skills that they will need throughout their school lives.
In my classroom, I want to build a learning environment where my students will become independent learners and thinkers.
My goal is that each child in the class will be able to work in these centers to build skills that they will need to build on in the future. Centers are a great way to help students become responsible for their learning.
