My Project

Part of this project title is actually part of the theme for Banned Books Week 2025, which was from October 5-11: Censorship is so 1984. Read for Your Rights!

Now more than ever, it is imperative that students understand the need for open access to information, literature, and resources.

They should also understand the impact of excessive technology on their lives. They should understand the importance of reading books, not just accessing information in reels and videos and social media posts. They should understand the risks of restricting access to information. They should understand the risks of accessing information that isn't factually correct.

In short, students and the community at large should read books that have been challenged and/or banned!

We had a widely successful event for Banned Books Week 2025 that supported educating the school and surrounding community. Now more than ever, we need people to understand the lasting impact of restricting access to information, especially with funding cuts to libraries already occurring. We gave away approximately 150 books during the event, and also had approximately 80 people sign up for library cards.

In 2026, we will kick off in February with a "Blind Date with a Banned Book" event. Our students will continue to research Banned Books Week as well as trends with banning and/or challenging books. Providing these books to the students will give them access to the books that have been most frequently challenged and/or banned since this data has been tracked over the decades. We will also spread awareness throughout our school community.

Thank you in advance for your part in this project! Our students are always appreciative of the selfless generosity of people who donate or share this project, or both. Your impact on our classrooms is greater than just a financial donation.

Mrs. Emily Cohen will only receive her materials if this project is fully funded by March 23.
