My Students

My Biology students are high achieving freshman and upperclassmen. One of the things I love about teaching Biology is that it is a great class to do projects that incorporate art. Many of my students don't get the opportunity to fit art in their schedules and really enjoy some of the art-infused Biology lessons we do.

This is one of my favorite projects of the year.

Kids get really into it and the quality of their work, along with their increased comprehension is high.

My Project

I have done these posters in the past few years with great success. Students learn different forms of cellular transport like osmosis, active transport, and passive transport. They demonstrate their knowledge by creating a labeled poster that shows a wide variety of cellular functions and structures of the cell membrane. I then demonstrate several watercolor techniques for students to understand how the paints work. Finally, I turn them loose on their own pencil drawings to paint them. The results are fantastic. Students really let go and express themselves with the watercolor paints. This project always yields high-quality work from all of my students ( low to high achievers). The best part is that students do very well in the formal assessment of the material. I've had more than one student say they learned the material so well because they really had to think out their painting. (Plus how awesome is it that they are referring to it as a painting!). My father is a professional artist and I know the value of art in life. Please help me restock my supply of watercolors and brushes so this project can continue in years to come ( nd for this year!).
