Students at our comprehensive high school have the opportunity to take some incredible classes. We offer excellent coursework in the science department where students can learn about so many science fields and career opportunities. My students come from a variety of backgrounds including rural, urban, and suburban settings and from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. We work together as a community of learners whether we're from an inner city housing development or from a dairy farm far from the city center.
In order for students to better focus on their work, I am creating a cell phone "parking lot" where students can safely store and charge their cell phones.
Students will know that the priority in our classroom is learning without the distraction of their cell phone.
My Project
Cell phones are an incredible learning tool. They can have all sorts of applications in learning. Students do not need their cell phones for class on most days. More and more cell phones offer a distraction to learning. Many of my colleagues have created unique ways for students to put away their phones.
I am creating a cell phone parking lot where students will charge their phones out of reach but within sight during class.
They can take comfort in knowing their phone is within sight and is being charged for later use. Students who use their cell phone when it's not appropriate will be asked to "park" their cell phones in the parking lot and focus on course work.
Some days we use the built in accelerometers and inclinometers in the cell phones to do lab work - setting ramp angles, measuring the speed of a runner up a set of stairs, or measuring the rate of acceleration of a remote controlled car. In this way students get to use the powerful built in sensors to learn about physics both in the classroom and in their daily lives. Most days we do not use cell phones so it's smart for students to park them in order to focus on theoretical problem solving skills.
