Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic, eager to learn, and dedicated. As an example of this drive, almost all of them walk to school, some tackling 30 minute hikes in the rain and snow. My school is comprised almost completely of students of color, most of whom have grown up in poverty. Students face many challenges both inside and outside of the classroom. Violence, poverty and injustice are normal parts of the day. However, this does not impact their drive nor their ambition.

In my Spanish classroom, students have the ability to reflect upon the Spanish speaking world and their own identities.

Whether from Spanish-speaking homes, other language backgrounds or first time second-language learners, students are able to push each other to be courageous and open-minded in the classroom. They tackle challenging topics, almost entirely in Spanish, and prove themselves time and time again to be creative and insightful. My classroom is especially interesting because it is comprised of students from grades 9 through 12, many of them meeting for the first time. Bonds grow quickly and friendships form as they work together to achieve their goals in the class.

My Project

This project is bringing together over 600+ students from the World Language Department to celebrate the Day of the Dead. This important cultural celebration occurs in the beginning of November and celebrates the lives of those we have lost. During this entire day event, students taking Spanish class at our school will be able to come together and engage with the celebration in a meaningful way, honoring those that they have lost and experiencing the true importance of the Mexican holiday.

This project will allow students to build relationships across grade levels, build a greater sense of cultural appreciation and competency, and in the process will allow them to better understand themselves.

They will have the opportunity to celebrate loved ones that they have lost through the creation of a school-wide ofrenda, and they will also have the chance to build community through fun and engaging activities. For example, students will be using the crafts supplied (glue, scissors, tissue paper and stems) to make papel picado and marigolds that are traditionally used to decorate the ofrendas. Students will utilize other supplies requested (markers, scissors, twine) to make masks traditional for the holiday. In this way, students will be able to express themselves creatively and see the Day of the Dead from a new and more engaging perspective. This celebration will ultimately allow students to understand the importance of the Day of the Dead, as well as to reflect on their own identities and cultures.
