Celebrating Thanksgiving Together by Reading and Researching

My students need 25 great books about Thanksgiving and celebrating fall holidays so they can understand American traditions.

My Students

How would you feel if you were a recent immigrant to this country and did not understand its traditions and celebrations? I have students from all over the world who have recently arrived from Asia and Africa. We need to learn about traditions and celebrations.

My school has a tradition of being a neighborhood school, but it is now a school in transition.

Our stable neighborhood is changing. Many of my students are the children of deployed military personnel. 18.4% of the families receive supplemental Social Security income or public assistance. Over half of my students qualify for free or reduced price breakfast and lunch. Our student population is racially and ethnically diverse. One out of every 9 students is in ELL programs. We have students who have recently arrived from Somalia, China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Pakistan, as well as natives from Alaskan rural areas. Although they represent the very best in America, many of my students suffer from low self esteem. We have problems with bullying on the playground and teasing and name calling in the classroom. We need to change the climate in our classroom. We need to learn about American traditions.

My Project

Many of my students have recently arrived in this country. They are having trouble fitting in because they need to learn about American traditions and celebrations. My third grade students do not have many opportunities to actually work together on meaningful projects. They need to learn to do research and then to write reports about holidays. We plan to use the books as the basis for our research and supplement them with information from the Internet. We plan to use Molly's Pilgrim as the basis of a unit. Students will learn that pilgrims are still coming to America and that people come for a variety of reasons. With your help we can make a big difference in the lives of these recent immigrants and their American counterparts. With the help of donors, we can create a common classroom culture.

To build compassion and empathy among my multiethnic and multilingual students, I need books to teach American traditions.

Even though many of my students cannot read, they do enjoy listening to stories. They will begin to express themselves working on group projects which they can share with others. We do not have enough money to buy new books for the library. I want to work with groups of 3rd grade students who can come to the library to research American holidays.
