My Students
When my students walk in the room, I feel happy even if I've been having a challenging day. They are eager, funny, curious and inspiring. Despite their learning disabilities and struggles with reading, the majority of my students persevere and improve their reading by at least one grade level. They care about one another and even more than a drive to succeed, they seek to belong and be part of.
I have been taking photos the whole year of their successes, their moments of connection, their academic collaboration and they enjoy nothing more than viewing these photos.
My Project
My classroom is full of charts and certificates that recognize student accomplishments. However, even more important to me is that students in my class gain a sense of their whole selves, not just their academic self. I am a photographer and take pictures of the kids all day long--I take pictures when three kids gather around a student's computer and they collaborate intently to correctly answer a question, a picture when a kid "levels up" in his reading program and he gets confetti sprinkled over his head or a picture when four kids act out a dialog and freeze for the climax.
A color printer would allow me to print high quality prints of kids focusing, collaborating and engaging in their academic life in a variety of ways.
I would use the color printer to share these captured class moments in order to build a sense of community and a sense of self within the community as well as an academic tool to provoke discussion and as a stimulus for writing. The photos generate conversations and memories and help these kids link their present learning to what we did the day before. The kids will also be allowed to select and print photos regularly to stimulate writing. For example, we will take pictures of them in posed tableaus and they will write on what the photo means and the action it captures. Finally, students will get to select a favorite photo, write about it and take it home to share with their parents about what they are learning and how they are growing and developing in school.
