Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are an extremely intelligent, diverse group of children primarily from low income backgrounds. Many are striving to be the first in their families to go to college.
My sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students are redefining possible at our charter school in Texas.
Many come from low-income families and struggle with a variety of issues before they even walk into the classroom. Regardless of their challenges, they are hard-working, determined individuals with a desire to attend college. Our goal, as a school, is to provide rigorous curriculum and build meaningful student relationships as we prepare them for college and beyond.
My Project
At the beginning of the school year we set the goal of reading 220 million words as a school. If the students met this goal we promised them a school carnival. We're almost at our goal and are beginning to prepare for our carnival.
Our school carnival will celebrate the accomplishments and hard work of our students.
On average our students each had to read 650,000 words to reach this goal. This year has been incredibly hard on our school community due to several tragedies and Hurricane Harvey. We want this carnival to be one filled with joy and celebration to end the year strong. Unfortunately, due to budgetary cuts, we don't have the finances to support this celebration.
We are asking for carnival games such as can tosses, sack races, and face paint. In addition, we're requesting small prizes such as stress relief balls and glow in the dark rings. Finally, we're requesting decorations such as pennants and table cloths. We will recycle these games and decorations to use again in the future to celebrate student achievement.
