My Students

Learning the rules is not always easy! Sometimes at home, parents might say that if someone hits you, you should always hit them back. Yet, here at school, we have to teach them the exact opposite. It can get very confusing for a sweet, young mind to hear these conflicting messages.

Our students are kind, hard working kids who face a lot of challenges.

Most come from low income, African American families and live in the neighborhoods surrounding the school. They adapt wonderfully to the rules of school with lots of positive reinforcement, and kind words.

My Project

To adults, a sticker or a piece of paper may not seem like much of a reward, but to students, these items open up a world of possibilities! Kindergarten through 2nd grade students just love stickers. There is no way of getting around it! So, each time they are following the rules in music class, a sticker shows their classroom teacher, peers, and parents what a nice job they did! Older students receive music notes, which are reward certificates I designed on my computer and copy on colored paper. They collect them throughout the year, and are able to redeem them for trips to the music prize bin. It may seem small, but with budget cuts occurring all over, the small things are the first to go.

Positive reminders like these help our students grow into good citizens who listen, follow directions, and show respect for others.

These are skills that last a lifetime! Please help our students learn to be good citizens here at school, so that they can grow into the good citizens of tomorrow's nation and world!
