Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

True to human nature, my students are all handling this pandemic differently. Some are content to be at home in bed, sleeping, watching Netflix and playing video games. Others have maintained their ambition and are working hard despite the changes. Some are isolated, depressed and struggling to maintain while, on the opposite extreme, others are overwhelmed with a full house where they are sharing one computer with multiple siblings. Still others have abandoned school to work full time to help support their families through this difficult time or have become caregivers to elderly, bedridden relatives.

My Project

I am putting together goody bags for my seniors. I already have candy, but I want to add something special and inspirational for their graduation. I teach five classes and wanted to award my most high achieving seniors from each class with a special book.

For the girls, I think the book, She Believed She Could, So She Did is perfect.

While for my most ambitious young men, Paul Coelho's The Alchemist would be an inspirational read. I believe this will make my students feel special and boost their spirits, if only for a short time. I encourage my students to journal to help process their feelings, so giving them the little notebooks is fitting.
