Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My amazing high school students are all recent immigrants who are learning English as their second, third or even fourth language. My students are from more than 20 countries and speak more than 6 different languages.

Due to Boston's skyrocketing costs of living, many of my students are living in shelters, group homes or other transitional housing, and some students struggle to focus with so much uncertainty and transition in their home lives.

According to NBC, Boston is the third most expensive place to live in the United States. With no end in sight to the housing crisis, it is vital that I make my classroom and curriculum welcoming and trauma responsive for all my students.

My Project

For their winter unit, my students will study the famous Holocaust memoir Night, by Elie Wiesel, and they will then write their own memoirs about the upstanders in their lives.

Elie Wiesel's Night is a profound testimony, but I also want to give my students access to the other amazing memoirs from around the world.

This collection of 15 memoirs includes stories of the Vietnam War and loss in Thi Bui's The Best We Can Do and immigration stories like Reyna Grande's The Distance Between Us.

Your donation will allow my students to read and learn from this collection of memoirs. Students will also use this set of memoirs to serve as mentor texts as they write their own memoirs.
