Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are largely low income and immigrants. Our school is a Title I school, which speaks to the degree of my students' poverty, where over 90% of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch.

As a teacher in a high poverty, largely Latinx, public urban school, I have the added challenge of developing and fostering a high learning environment in my classes with students who may have been conditioned to believe they can't achieve because of our community's poverty.

One of the hardest parts of this new (distance) learning situation is the lack of constancy. We left school on a Friday, thinking we would be back in a week, and had distance learning for months. And now we will continue distance learning for the next semester. I'm starting the school year, not ever seeing or knowing my students in person. As a teacher, I need to provide my students with as much stability as I can even in these uncertain times. I truly believe its my job. Especially with all of the uncertainty of the last and next few months.

My Project

My students are special and I want them to always feel that way. So much of teaching is about relationship building and celebrating students on a daily basis! This is hard to do when we are social-distancing and learning virtually! Every one of my students learns in a different way, and each of them is profoundly unique. They may be grouped in the same classroom, but they are not the same. I really want to get to know them better, thereby establishing a personal rapport through letter writing. Letter writing during this time allows me the opportunity to connect with them. These materials allow me to send letters, and a birthday celebration.

Snail mail will be especially important for celebrating their special days and birthdays during this time of social distancing and quarantine.
