Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 20 preschoolers living in a diverse neighborhood who attend a large public school receiving Title I funds within an even larger school system. The majority of my students are English Language Learners, and a variety of beautiful languages are heard throughout the day in our class. At 3, 4, and 5 years of age, my preschool classroom is their first time being in an educational environment with other students.
It is a time of many proud "firsts" and remarkable moments of questioning, discovery, and exploration.
My students are very verbal and social, and they have an unbridled passion for trying new things and solving problems. Preschool is a time to nurture natural wonder and curiosity and to set the foundations for skills and habits that will follow my students as they continue with their educational experiences.
I am always looking for new ways to feed my students' interests. I change the materials and layout of my classroom throughout the year to provide them with the best learning environment that caters to their interests. I cherish my role as an educator in supporting my students on all of their learning paths!
My Project
Picture books are an essential feature in preschool classrooms! By providing my students with quality, diverse picture books, I am able to share books that touch upon the concept of windows and mirrors, providing my students the opportunity to look into worlds that are different from their own, as well as see their own world and experiences reflected back to them!
These diverse picture books of holidays around the world will celebrate my students and their families.
I am constantly reading about and searching for picture books that unite us, that allow my students the space to ask questions and make comments, and that help my students learn from one another.
These picture books touch upon a wide variety of holidays that may not always be touched upon in traditional curriculum including Holi, Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, Kwanzaa, Native voices around Thanksgiving, the Lunar New Year, and more. These books also provide age-appropriate perspectives to my young students about why we celebrate Veteran's Day, what the new year means, the origins of Christian and Jewish holidays, and more.
I am so excited at the opportunity to bring these incredible picture books to my students! I would like to share these books in my classroom library for students to access, for my own read-aloud collection to share with my class, and as part of our Lending Library for students to take home and share with their families.
