Celebrating Melva Houston and Jazz

Help me give my students hands-on materials and books to learn about local jazz musician Melva Houston.

My Project

Each year I help my third grade students research famous people from our community. This year we will learn about local musician, Melva Houston. Mrs. Houston was a jazz and blues artist who performed across the country and Europe. Our city recently created "Melva's Alley" in the newly formed Market Street Arts and Entertainment District to honor her legacy. It includes a large mural of Mrs. Houston singing.

This project will provide hands-on materials and books for my students to learn about and perform jazz music.

Students will use the Play-Doh with our Makey Makey STEM kits to play electronic bongo drums and the keyboard. They will use the scarves while they move to the rhythm of Mrs. Houston's music.

Students will listen to different jazz songs by using the interactive book "Welcome to Jazz: A Swing-Along Celebration of America’s Music" while "Play It! Jazz and Folk Songs" will be a popular addition to our section of sheet music books in our library.

Students will use the Kwik Stix Solid Tempera Paint Sticks to make a colorful mural inspired by the mural of Mrs. Houston. New color toner cartridges will allow me to print color posters to inspire students to learn about other famous jazz musicians and their music.
