This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Lunar New Year in 2025 will happen Friday, January 31 as many around the world welcome the Year of the Snake.

Lunar New Year celebrations are important to our Chinese and Vietnamese students and are a wonderful opportunity for our Black and Latinx students to learn about the cultural traditions of their classmates.

The items in this project will integrate language arts and math to our celebration this year. The requested books will be added to our collection and provide timely read alouds and discussions for my students to learn about the different countries that celebrate Lunar New Year. The book How to Catch a Dragon will engage students in small group work to devise a trap to catch the elusive Dragon. The assorted paper, red envelopes, and adhesive tape will be used for paper crafts that will incorporate geometry concepts on circles and cylinders as they make chinese firecracker ornaments, tangerines, and paper lanterns. These paper crafts will also give my students much-needed practice cutting and folding paper to help develop dexterity and fine motor skills.

And it wouldn't be Lunar New Year without a celebration. To prepare, my students will learn how families prepare to ring in the year of the snake, giving them the opportunity to help clean our classroom and their desks with the requested non-toxic cleaning supplies (cleaning vinegar, alcohol wipes and paper towels). They will receive red envelopes with chocolate coins and paper lunch bags filled with fortune cookies, almond cookies, lunar new year stickers, and guava candy. The fireworks bubble machines will also be part of our celebration. The plushies and toys will be incorporated into our homework incentive activities to further help my students stay academically on track as they prepare for their first time taking our state's annual standardized test.
