Celebrating Excellence

Please help me give my students a fantastic activity! At LIS, we celebrate excellence by creating a positive environment and recognizing student achievements, which promotes mental health and a sense of community.

My Project

Student learning and mental health declined as a result of Covid-19. It felt like we were starting to make gains when the Lahaina fires happened. As a result of COVID and the fire, our students are struggling academically and emotionally. Over the past few months, we have found that students respond (working harder/producing quality work) when offered a positive reward. We have also been focusing on our students' mental health needs and realized they need positive activities/events to spend time with friends outside the classroom. So we created an activity that addresses both.

Celebrating Excellence acknowledges students' educational achievements and outstanding contributions and reinforces them with a positive mental health activity.

We are planning a day in April where those who have made academic gains and demonstrated outstanding citizenship will be recognized with a fun day. A local restaurant, Leilani's on the Beach, is donating food (this is the need for plates and utensils) and a shaved ice machine (the reason for small cups). We take about 275- 300 students to Airport Beach for a day of crazy games, food, and fun. We have 20 community volunteers to help with the games and organizing the kids. We will have a snack and water station for breaks (where the snacks and water cups are used). Although games and food are donated, these remaining items are essential to the success of this event. With all the devastation Lahaina has suffered, this will be a wonderful celebration for our students.
