Celebrating Excellence

Help me give my students an amazing reward activity! At LIS we celebrate excellence by creating a positive environment by recognizing student achievements to promote mental health and sense of community.

My Project

Student learning and mental health declined as a result of Covid-19. It felt like we were just starting to make gains when the Lahaina fires happened. As a result of COVID and the fire, our students are struggling academically and emotionally. Over the past year, we have found that students are responding (working harder/producing quality work) when offered a positive reward. We have also been focusing on our students' mental health needs and realized they need positive activities/events to spend time with friends outside of the classroom. So we created an activity that addresses both. Celebrating Excellence acknowledges the educational achievements and outstanding contributions of students and reinforces them with a positive mental health activity. We are planning a day in November where those who have made academic gains and demonstrated outstanding citizenship will be recognized with an afternoon of fun. We have restaurants in the community donating food (this is the need for utensils, boats, water cups..) and shaved ice machine (the reason for small cups). We have a company donating a jumping castle and DJ. The afternoon will be spent on the PE field celebrating their excellence - music, food, and fun games. The paper is used to print certificates that are passed out to individual students celebration. Balloons and tape are used for a game and the snacks are set out for students to eat through out day with the other donated items. This is wonderful celebration for our students to encourage academic growth and positive mental health.
