My Students

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose...” ― Dr. Seuss No one speaks to children quite like Dr. Seuss. To honor his wonderful facility with both words and ideas, we are creating a K-2 celebration of his life and work.

I teach in a K-5 public elementary school with a diverse population of about 1300 students.

My students are generally of low socio-economic status immigrant families from all corners of the globe. The ability to participate in a music ensemble, to play an instrument, or sing, is a unique opportunity for many of these students. We feel that music is an important part of their education and understand that their musical experience goes beyond holding an instrument and making a sound, it actually helps their brains to develop into better readers, writers, and thinkers. For our celebration, we will incorporate literacy and music in our K-2 classrooms, having students read, write and sing about Dr. Seuss. Representatives from each class will perform their original works as part of a culminating event in our auditorium on Dr. Seuss Day.

My Project

Can you imagine the joy in the face of a 7 year old who has just authored a Seuss-inspired poem and recited it with confidence and pride? Perhaps you remember with fondness your first reading of "Green Eggs and Ham" or of the exuberance your own children exhibited when they first heard that whimsical and wonderful tale. These books and Cd's will allow our teachers and students to explore this author's life and work beyond the books we all know and love. Having enough copies of his biography for students to explore together in the classroom will open up new worlds of understanding and allow teachers to delve into the non-fiction side of the story. Incorporating more non-fiction reading into our curriculum is a school-wide goal, so this project can help accomplish that as well.

Not only is Dr. Seuss accessible for early readers, but he delivers important life messages that are relevant and delightful to both children and adults alike.

Your donation will help pave the way to our first school-wide Dr. Seuss celebration, which will hopefully become an annual event and treasured memory for generations to come!
