Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a diverse first grade class in a Title 1 school in the north Bronx borough of NYC. Most of my children are struggling with distance learning due to a lack of consistent routine, trauma in their personal lives, and living circumstances. Despite these obstacles, they are resilient little humans who are doing the best they know how amidst the chaos occurring in the world.

My Project

Now more than ever, guiding young learners to develop respect and accept cultural diversity is essential ...and using diverse children's literature is an excellent place to start. Children learn more about themselves when they connect with books providing them with a mirror into their lives. Culturally diverse books can give young learners a window into the lives of others and a mirror into their own lives. With distance learning, reading important stories about our time and talking about them is a powerful way to engage very young students and teach important ideas. Stories have the power to open our eyes, make us ponder, give us hope, and leave lasting lessons long after computers are turned off.

The picture books I requested touch on various topics such as diversity, social-emotional learning, growth mindset, empathy, friendship, and kindness.

I plan to read these books with my students during live sessions to help embrace diversity, spark meaningful conversations with one another, and encourage a positive change for the future.

These books will not only be used during distance learning, but also for many years to come as they will be added to my classroom library when we return back to school.
