Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My first-grade students are excited to be returning to school to learn together this year. They love sharing about their families, their hobbies, and their hopes and dreams. They are silly and playful and anxious to connect with each other after our pandemic year.

First graders are full of enthusiasm for learning, curious about the world around them, and eager to share their observations and stories from their lives.

They love to explore favorite authors in reading, tell stories from their lives in writing, and learn new math and science concepts.

The majority of students in my class come from low-income backgrounds. School is a safe place for them to learn and grow together and to create a supportive community.

My Project

Many of my first grade students spent all of last year in distance learning, so this is their first year at school and their first time meeting classmates whose cultural backgrounds and life experiences may be different from theirs. On the playground and in classroom conversations they have been exploring these differences as they ask question, make new friends and build a classroom community.

For young children, imaginative play is one of the most powerful ways they make sense of the world.

During choice time in the classroom, children are drawn to create families, role play situations they have seen in the world around them, and retell stories that we have read together. With gentle guidance these playful scenarios can become learning experiences where they discover different family structures, cultural traditions, and ways that people help each other in a community.

I have selected these materials thinking particularly about how children can challenge racial and gender stereotypes through creative play. Our work in literacy this year is centered on exploring identity, naming and celebrating differences, and beginning to question stereotypes and assumptions. Children will apply these big ideas to the more unstructured spaces of dramatic play using costumes and puppets to create stories together and explore what is possible in the world.
