My students need multicultural materials such as dolls, pretend play items and art supplies to open up their minds to the diversity of the world around them.
As my students enter into Kindergarten it becomes evident to their families that neither they, nor their world, will stay small forever. It is incredibly important to share the deeper meaning of diversity with my students so that they can appreciate and help create a positive cultural community.
Mrs. N's kindergarten classroom is full of wonderful students and is located in an urban city in Minnesota.
We are a diverse group of learners, with over 6 different cultural backgrounds represented. Many of the students are new to the country and English Language Learners. The majority of the families struggle financially, with over 15% of my students being currently homeless. As a classroom we are thankful for any and all learning opportunities, and I work hard to provide enriching experiences for all of the students. We are in a school that has been in our community for a long time, filled with great educators-many who have been teaching since Mrs. Norman went to school there! In Kindergarten we learn best through practice and hands-on learning, working hard for our success in academics, socially and within our community!
My Project
This project will provide my current Kindergarten students, and students for years to come, with valuable multicultural and diversity appreciation activities. These materials will help to surround my students with the many cultures that are represented in our classroom. This includes a variety of dramatic play and block play activities for students to explore and create a positive play experience that mirrors our great and diverse community. Also included is art materials to help all students represent themselves and their unique traits while expressing their creativity. All of these items will ensure that every student, no matter what their background and abilities are, will be able to see themselves represented in our classroom. This project will allow students to experience different cultures and ideas within an environment that is familiar, an important piece in instilling a lifelong appreciation of each other and positive multicultural learning experiences.
This project will have a significant impact on my students' understanding of each other, their community and the world around them.
Many of my students are just starting to understand diversity and these materials will provide them with a fun way to further their multicultural experiences. This speaks to Dr. King's vision of a Beloved Community, with my students working together in the spirit of friendship and goodwill. Hopefully this project will impact them now and throughout their futures!
