My Students
As a teacher of special education students in a low-income, urban school district, my students face a variety of challenges both in and out of the classroom. With many of my students reading below grade level in terms of fluency and comprehension, there is not a strong desire or passion for reading. My school and district lacks funding in resources, leading my students to not have access to inspiring novels. My goal is to provide my students with new and exciting books to motivate them in and out of the classroom and to help instill a passion and love of reading, leading them to reach both their academic and personal goals.
My Project
Being that my classroom is composed of students with a variety of disabilities, there is a lack of motivation and drive when it comes to reading. Many of my students struggle with connecting to a text and do not have access to new, inspiring novels that celebrate diversity. Because my classroom is made up of a diverse group of students, I would like provide them with novels that celebrate diversity.
By donating to my project, you will not only help motivate students to read, but you will also motivate them to learn the stories of different individuals that they can connect with.
My students will not only be able to work on their fluency and comprehension skills while reading these novels, but they will also learn from unique experiences of individuals who face a variety of challenges, whether those challenges be about race, socioeconomic status, gender identity, sexuality, or disability.
