Celebrating Differences, Being Kind, Developing Empathy

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come to school and are excited to learn new things every day. They keep me on my toes with their inquisitive minds and their desire to work in collaborative groups. Our school is a Title I school, and we are located in a small community where every student is given the opportunity to become a lifelong learner. My goal as their teacher is to provide a comfortable environment for them to care about their work in and outside the classroom.
My Project
Every year during the first week of school, I begin with a lesson called "Don't break my heart." In this lesson I ask my students to say mean hurtful things about me. As they say these things I begin to crumble a paper heart. Once this heart is completely crumbled, I ask them to say nice things to me. As these nice things are being said I unfold and try to smooth out the heart. I then hold up the once beautiful heart and explain to the students that this is exactly how our hearts feel when someone hurts our feelings...you can forgive them, but your heart never completely forgets. I pass the heart around for all my students to sign and we keep it up the entire year as a reminder. This powerful lesson is done after I read a book called "Spoken Memories." In order for me to teach my young students other powerful lessons about tolerance I am requesting various children's books that teach diversity, books that show kindness, and books that will help them build empathy.
Teaching tolerance to children is important because we want them to respect the rights of others, while celebrating the beauty and uniqueness in the world.
Your donation will expose my students to so many different stories that will allow them to accept others differences, teach kindness, and help them develop empathy and an understanding of the lives of other human beings. Thank you!
