My Students

In just one year, I will spend more than 1260 hours with my students. In that valuable time, I will only be effective if I am able to teach them so much more than life science. Beyond content, I also need to teach them to be active, contributing citizens of their community and the world.

My students attend an inner city Maryland school.

For the past 4 years, the teachers, staff members, students, families and I have been working tirelessly to help our turn around school, (identified because it was one of the lowest performing schools in the city) really be turned around. We are proud to share that we have met our turn around goals and now continue our incredible efforts to ensure that 100% of our students are on track for college. A part of being on track for college includes the idea that our students must know much more than what is tested on state tests. We work to instill "5 Promises" in our students. These are characteristics of good citizens that will allow students to be successful individuals in and outside the classroom. These characteristics are: Honor and Integrity, Commitment to Quality, Perseverance, No Excuses, and Contribution. We message these promises to students daily and reward and recognize students who demonstrate these promises.

My Project

This project seems simple-- a request for snacks-- but the impact is immeasurable. These crackers, pretzels, granola bars, fruit snacks, cookies and chips will help to create a school store. In order to further highlight the 5 Promises, our students will earn points throughout the day when they demonstrate one of these good character traits. Then students will get to spend their points at our school store. These snacks will offer short-term motivation for our students to instill these character traits in their lives for long-term impact. Along with the academic content that students learn everyday, these quality traits will help ensure my students are successful in 7th grade, high school, college and beyond.

These students are the future leaders of our city, state, nation and world and with your help they will get to practice acting in respectful and responsible manners. Thank you for supporting my efforts to grow my students' brains and hearts.
