Celebrating Chinese New Year

Help me give my students a variety of ways to learn about and celebrate Chinese New Year with a dragon bouncy hopper, hand drums, and cleaning supplies.

My Project

Chinese New Year is widely celebrated in Hawaii. Every year before COVID-19, I introduced the topic with a fabulous field trip to downtown Honolulu on the city bus to take in the street activities including lion and dragon dances and the special displays and food preparations. It was an energetic visit to a historic and cultural part of town, always filled with curiosities and discoveries. Unfortunately, Covid took an economic toll on Chinatown and with so many shuttered businesses, the field trip is off the calendar this year.

However, that doesn't mean we can't celebrate at school.

We will usher it in with a bang—on the handheld drums—and a bounce—on the dragon inflatable. The pretend tea set will be a delight, and the engaging flap book will reveal an age-level story about the Chinese New Year. The kids are going to love it!

In addition, we want a clean start and throughout the year. We eat breakfast and lunch in class and need a broom and dustpan as well as dishwashing and cleaning supplies.
