"Whatever the cost of our libraries, the price is cheap compared to that of an ignorant nation." Walter Cronkite. My students spend 20 minutes every day independently reading a book of their choice. I desperately need books to satisfy their interests and needs.
My students are a varied bunch: some are athletes, some are into drama and the arts, some are proficient readers, and some are fledgling ones, but they all read in my class.
I see a lot of enthusiasm for books that pique their interests, which are as varied as they are. As their teacher, I read to find books that will pique their interest. But it takes time and trust for them to realize I have some "book cred" and just don't recommend any book. Slowly but surely, I will narrow down what each student finds interesting, and what will get them reading! To do this, however, I need a large selection of books! I have purchased some for my room, but unfortunately am not receiving additional funds from my district. Your donation will help to ferret out the reader in all of my students.
My Project
My goal for this year is to increase reading interest in my classroom. To do this, I will have a renewed focus for reader's workshop. This is my first year teaching 7th grade so I need appropriate books. They will be required to have a "To Read List" in the writer's notebook. I want to tease new and exciting books that they may not have heard before. The books will be used for the students to choose from during our independent reading time which is approximately 20 minutes each day. Students also use this time to practice reading strategies that they are taught in class. Once they have completed their books, they will find ways to share information about their book with others in the class. This could be done through sharing fabulous first lines, book reviews, book trailers, or book speed dating. Every kid needs to be a reader. By allowing kids access to a diverse library of books with many genres, subjects, and a variety of characters, we are increasing the chance that they will find a good book to match their interests and spur a life-long love of words.
It is my hope that with appropriate high interest books that I can take that child who is not really into reading and turn them into someone that can't wait to check out the next book.
I make it a priority for me to find books that will appeal to them. I need a lot of lower high interest books. Reading is something that they will need all their lives, and I just hope that I can get them invested in it. I want to be that person that made them love reading.
