Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are Black and African American, K-5th graders from various backgrounds and life experiences seeking a safe and supportive wellness space to celebrate culture and identity. In all honesty, I am eagerly waiting to meet my students! I am piloting a new program to better support our Black students, who suffer higher numbers of suspensions and lower literacy rates in LAUSD.

My students are joyous, energetic, loving Black and African American children who will benefit from a classroom devoted to celebrating them.

My student's school is located in the Faircrest Heights District of Los Angeles, California. They are special to me because they are resilient, kind, and I look forward to building long-lasting relationships with them this year!

My Project

I am honored to be developing our first ever Black Student Achievement Program at our school! As a school social worker, I will provide a safe and welcoming space for our Black students to celebrate their inherent Black excellence. As a new program at the school, my classroom is 100% empty and I am building my vision based on the lessons of the Black educators and community workers before me that fought for Black students to have a safe space to be themselves and celebrate culture, identity, and resilience!

The carpet and cushions will allow me to create a safe corner in the classroom for students to rest, practice deep breathing, engage in art or journaling, and read book by Black authors about beautiful Black kids that look just like them!
