Many families in my community trace their roots back to the origins of paniolo- Hawaiian Cowboy- culture on the Big Island of Hawai'i. "Aloha Rodeo" explores the early days of that culture, it's spread across the islands, and the birth of rodeo as a sport that many of my students compete in to this day!
"Aloha Rodeo" is the kind of story that even the most kolohe student can be inspired by!
What's even better is that this is a non-fiction story! That means that many of the people my students read about actually are distant uncles, aunties, and cousins. How cool is it to read an exciting history of your own family as a teenager? Providing this title for an entire class to read will give my students the opportunity to see their own culture from a different lens, and have meaningful discussion about it.
