This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I work with a targeted group of minority students who are facing behavioral, academic, and/or socio-emotional challenges. My goal is to provide support in these areas so that they not only pass their classes and ensure they are able to graduate but also build soft skills and character traits that will make them successful in the real world.
Building literacy while also practicing gratitude and mindfulness through journaling are skills that will support students in becoming long-life learners and successful, happier adults.
Not many of my students like to read or write, and many don't know how to express their feelings and emotions in appropriate, constructive ways. I used the journals in this project with my classes this year and I saw their benefit and would love to have a class set for next year. Many of my lessons and conversations focus on mindfulness and gratitude and using journaling as a coping mechanism to face our challenges has been helpful. I also started surveying students, asking them what types of books they liked to read, and incorporated those into our classroom list, hence the choices in this project. I hope to include a gratitude journal and other treats in each of my students' welcome gift bags for next year. The LED sign will be used to as decor to boost confidence and celebrate students' accomplishments. Thank you for your support.
