As a high school teacher and a robotics team mentor, creating a supportive environment for all students is a part of my job as well as being very important to me personally. Our robotics team strives to make sure that a diverse group of students feel represented in STEM. One of the ways that we do that is by celebrating Pride at any events we compete at in June. We suppliment our normal spirit wear with rainbow flags and capes and decorate our pit in flags.
One of the most important things we can do to make students feel welcome during Pride month is share our pride spirit with any student who would like to join in the fun, so we also give away mini pride flags, stickers, and wristbands so that any students at the event who want to can feel represented.
This year, when we traveled to the world championships in Houston, TX, we brought our pride spirit with us to share! It was amazing to see so many students from all around the world come by to tell us how happy and supported it made them to see our rainbow display. It was especially gratifying to hear how excited students were to find the specific pride flag that represents them in our display.
